Description :
The free Victoria program is designed for testing, measuring performance, servicing HDD, SSD, Flash drives with IDE / SATA, USB, SCSI, etc. interfaces, as part of the management standard
Possible areas of its application:
Daily monitoring of drive status, viewing SMART parameters of drives;
Test labs for testing computer hardware and writing reviews;
Workshops for repair of PCs and drives, stands for input and output control;
The solution to some problems with drives, defects, noise, passwords, etc.
Erasing information without the possibility of recovery (before selling the drive, etc.);

Program Version : 5.2
Interface language : Russian, English
Treatment : not required

System Requirements :
Operating system Windows 2000 / XP / 8/10 x32. Under Win 9x, the program works only in PIO. Memory 2 Gb or higher. SVGA video card. Video mode from 1280 * 1024 is recommended. Keyboard, mouse. Internet connection is desirable. Administrator rights are required to run the program. On Windows x64 - performance is maintained, except for PIO mode.

The program can work in two modes:
API mode (work through the Windows programming interface). He allowed to get direct access even to the system disk, without disrupting the system. API mode allows you to test any HDDs, CDs, SSDs, FDDs, Flashs, etc. installed in the system. regardless of the interface - SCSI, USB or FireWire, as well as virtual container disks created, for example, by data encryption programs.

PIO mode: for professional use only! This mode allows you to access IDE / SATA drives bypassing Windows directly through the ports. If you do not know what this mode is for, then do not use it.

Additional Information:
The program works under Windows 7, 8 and 10. However, in these systems there will be some restrictions on the program’s functionality, which is associated with the excessive protection of Windows 7-10 from direct access to disks. On Windows x64, operability is preserved, with the exception of PIO mode.

Key features of the program:
Read the passport of the disk and display on the screen technical information about the drive (model, serial number, version, features, etc.)
HDD acoustic noise level control, if it supports it;
View SMART parameters of the drive, a quick assessment of its status on pseudographic scales and status register. Including viewing hidden attributes of IBM / HITACHI / Toshiba 3.5 drives;
Running built-in HDD SMART tests and monitoring their progress;
View, analyze, research and record SMART-drive logs, including modern 48-bit logs (appeared since v. 4.75).
Surface testing by verification, reading and writing, with the calculation and display of addresses of defective blocks;
Testing on the list of areas, numbering sectors on the list.
Measuring the speed of linear, nonlinear and random reading from the HDD;
Build a quick and complete speed graph;
Testing drives for data distortion during reception and transmission - DDD option;
HDD shaft speed measurement;
Hiding surface defects by the method of reassigning sectors from the reserve (remap) on any of the reading tests;
Hard disk performance measurement (benchmark functions):
Measurement of HDD head positioning speed and access time to sectors (random read / write);
View the contents of sectors with the ability to edit;
Cleaning the disk (or part of it) from information - "low-level formatting";
Management of security options: setting a password on a USB HDD / SSD, removing a password;
Ability to stop and start the USB / SAS HDD spindle motor. Putting SSD into sleep mode;
HDD head positioning test (similar to how the OS does it during intensive work), in order to identify the reliability and thermal stability of the PC disk subsystem;
View information about logical partitions of HDD with indication of partition boundaries (so far only MBR format is supported);
Note : Some USB drives are not supported by the program. In this case, surface testing is possible, but it is not possible to view SMART parameters and a complete passport.
Attention! On the USB controller "USB 3.0 Data cable" from the Seagate FreeAgent kit, as well as on WD Passport - there may be problems with using a password. Experimenting with them is not recommended! Details

Setting up the Setup program
Common presets, passport options: basic presets, HDD / SSD passport options.
Only non-destructive functions - only non-destructive functions. Disables those features of the program that record to the tested HDD to protect against erasing information on it. But even better is to think before any action.
Attention! Starting from version 4.72, this switch also disables the ATA commands to the drives, which leads to limited functionality (an incomplete passport will be shown, it will not work to get SMART). The reason is to improve compatibility with some builds of Windows 10.
Get passport on PCI double click - For PIO only. Get a passport by double-clicking on the PCI-scan field. Made at the request of the lazy. It allows you to avoid clicking on the button for obtaining a passport HDD. Instead, just click on the selected line of the PCI controller.
Don't remember Primary chan. - do not remember the primary channel of the motherboard controller in the program settings. It allows you to avoid the erroneous selection of the primary channel (on which the system HDD usually hangs), and thereby reduces the risk of accidentally working with the system hard drive through the ports. It works only in PIO. For those whose primary channel is free - the option can be disabled.
Old USB / SAS mode - replacing 16-byte USB / SAS commands with 12-byte ones for compatibility with some outdated USB drives.
Disable color into passport - turn off HDD passport coloring. For aesthetes who for some reason do not like the color scheme of the HDD passport.
Only SCSI passport command - only SCSI passport commands. Applies to API only. The fact is that some PCI controllers (in particular, Silicon Image 3112) have a glitch. Both channels display HDDs with the same passports (although they are actually different). Moreover, the SCSI emulation mode does not manifest this glitch. It makes sense to turn on the option only if there are problems (incorrect passport, device freezing and loss when trying to open it), because the SCSI passport for ordinary (non-SCSI drives) is incomplete.
Don’t get drive type - do not ask for the type of drive when receiving a passport. API only. When installing a daw, the program does not request the so-called "geometric parameters" of the disk and its type (CD / Flash / FDD). Instead, these parameters are calculated analytically. It allows you to avoid the hang of some controllers (which is rare, and mainly on FireWire devices). Discontinued in version 4.72.
Don't get SCSI 25h - Do not use the outdated SCSI GetCapacity 25h command, which is enabled on PocketBook 301 e-books. But unfortunately, only this command is normally accepted by RockChip players, and therefore this switch is introduced. It is not remembered in the settings, and by default should be turned off.
Auto detect USB drives - if the daw is installed, then when you connect an external USB drive, the program will inform you that a new device has been found. However, this can interfere, and therefore is made disconnected.
Show logical drives - show logical drives in the list of API devices. If the daw is installed, then in addition to physical disks, logical partitions (in the form of letters) will be displayed. Sometimes it is necessary, for example, to find out which physical drive corresponds to the drive letter.
Ignore FDD - do not show floppy drives in the list of API devices. Drives are very slow and begin to make noise when determining, which is not always desirable. Installed daw will exclude access to them.
Ignore HDD - do not show partitions of hard drives in the list of API devices.
'I speak Russian' - allows displaying Russian messages in the interface, which are sometimes found. They are mostly comic in nature.
Classic group style - switches the rounded frames in the design of the interface to rectangular. Version 4.72 has been removed.
Grid lines enabled - turns on the display of the auxiliary grid in smart and in the scan.
If API then open tab 1 - when you switch the program to API mode, tab 1 (Standard) automatically opens so that you do not have to do this manually each time to select the desired drive in the list. If you remove this checkbox, the program will remember the last opened tab.
On -1000, off -1024 - switch from regular mega / gig / terabytes (multiples of 1024) to commercial (multiples of 1000). For those who want the displayed volume numbers to match those on the drive labels and on Windows.

Log settings : settings for the event log.
In the process of the program, all user actions, messages, errors, etc. Automatically written to a text file - work log. In this section you can specify the file name, enable / disable the log, and also clear it.
NUL or letter : the path to the disk on which the program will place the journal, and will also add passport files and other information extracted from the drives. If you specify NUL, then the current directory with the executable file is used.
Logs dir : path to the directory on the specified drive.
Save to file - keep a general log of work.
Separate logs - separate folders for each drive, each with its own log. In this case, the general journal remains, and all entries are duplicated in it.

Seek & Surface scan options : options for testing the surface, access time and HDD mechanics.
Swap navigation Up / Dn keys - swap the jump buttons when testing the surface.
Auto repeat jump keys - enable auto repeat jumps while holding these buttons. Next to the input field, you can set the retry interval, in milliseconds.
Enable breaking internal loops - Allow interruption of internal loops of the program. It is very useful when testing faulty drives, which, by hanging, can block the program’s response to keys. If the daw is installed - the program responds more quickly to the "Break ALL" key. However, interrupting internal loops also breaks the ATA protocol in PIO mode, which is not always useful. If it is supposed to test only serviceable disks, then this daw needs to be removed.
Refresh LBA before operations - When receiving a passport, always re-lay out the first and last LBA in the scan and seek input fields. Previous numbers in these fields are erased. If the daw is unchecked, the program will do this only when changing the HDD automatically (which is a proprietary algorithm that greatly simplifies the life of the user). It is not recommended to install it unnecessarily.
Reseting between LoopScan - When looping a scan, send a soft reset to the HDD before each new cycle. It is necessary to prevent the influence of the disk cache with a small cycle step. It is recommended to always keep it on - there will be less problems. It works only in PIO.
Don't blink border of pause key - turn off the flickering frame around the pause button in the surface scan.
Timings depending on HDD - use intelligent tuning with the timing program when testing the surface. These timings depend on the UDMA mode, volume, model, and more. The result is a more even map of "squares" when testing. It is recommended to enable.
Ajusting RDTSC before tests - each time you run tests, check the processor clock speed and re-configure the timer. It is recommended to include on laptops, as they change the frequency of the processor at different loads. The option is meaningless when RDTSC timers are disabled.
Long-read actions count - only for versions starting from 4.54 and PIO mode. Indicates how many sectors to read in long read in Restore mode.
Recall HDD before Scan - perform winchester wakeup and head installation on the “zero track” before testing the surface. If enabled, the initial portion of the test looks more accurate.

Shutdown may be required on drives with a damaged start, as well as on SSD.

Timers set : settings for timer types in the program. Designed to eliminate possible problems, and to achieve stable behavior of the program on different hardware and operating systems. On the Setup tab, there are 3 switches related to timers. Let us consider in detail each of them. Asterisks indicate recommended values.
Section "Common RTC". This is a general timer related to surface scans, seeks, etc., mainly in API mode.
RDTSC is a CPU clock cycle counter. Starting with Pentium I, all processors support a command that issues the number of clock cycles that have passed since it was turned on. This allows you to use it to accurately measure time intervals. But unfortunately, on some systems with multi-core processors this method may not work correctly. This will manifest itself in the form of phantom hangs, stops, incorrect output of results, etc. glitches. If these phenomena occur, then the program allows you to use an alternative timer option -
GTC (short for Get Tick Count), which is one of the components of the Windows operating system. This timer is slightly less accurate than RDTSC, but in most cases its capabilities are sufficient for normal HDD testing. If Victoria is used on a multi-core computer, I recommend checking both timer options, and if there are no glitches, select RDTSC. On single-core systems, RDTSC mode is preferred.

Section "Scan : PIO only". This timer measures intervals only in test mode (Scan, Seek) in PIO mode. In the API, it does not affect anything.
GTC Unlike the previous example, the essence of this switch is different. In addition to the standard RDTSC / GTC, here you can choose an alternative -
MMTimer (short for "multimedia timer"). It has a reduced processor load, and allows you not to spend its resources during HDD testing. For comparison, in the RDTSC / GTC mode, the load on a single-core system can reach 99%, and in the MMTimer mode - only 10-30% (and if you turn off the Grid - then 0-4%). We recommend that you always use MMTimer, if possible. Problems can only be in some versions of Windows 9x.
Note. The "Common RTC" switch has privilege over the RDTSC / GTC timer mode in "Scan: PIO only".

ATA protocol settings : ATA protocol settings . Used only in PIO mode.
BUSY Timeout - time adjustment (in ms) during which the program will wait for the HDD response after the command is issued.
Ready Timeout - time adjustment (in ms) during which the program will wait for the HDD to be ready before issuing a command.
DREQ Timeout - time adjustment (in ms) during which the program will wait for the HDD to be ready to send / receive a data block after a data exchange command has been issued (read or write).
ATA Timer - select the type of timer that will be used to measure time intervals in the PIO protocol. It measures the main HDD latency intervals (DRQ, BUSY). The contraindications for using RDTSC are the same as in the first example - hard glitches on multiprocessor systems. In this case, GTC should be used. If there are no glitches, then RDTSC is preferable.

EXT Passport - the section is responsible for the actions that are performed in PIO mode when the drive passport is received with the EXT button located near the main Passport button on the Standard tab. This button is hidden in API mode. Starting from version 4.72, the button appeared in the API mode, its functionality is gradually expanding (see whatsnew.rtf application file).
Diag SF - check the sanity of the drive. A command is sent to it, which returns an error on partially faulty HDDs and SSDs, and the word * Failed is displayed in the passport.
Real Size - The real drive size is requested, excluding HPA. In case of discrepancy - the real volume is displayed in the passport.
Power status - The current state of spindle rotation is requested with the message "Active" or "Standby" in the passport.
Buffer diag - Diagnose cache buffer and drive interface. A number is written to the buffer, then it is read and compared. In case of mismatch, it is decomposed into bits and displayed in the passport. This function was written at the time of IDE hard drives, for detecting broken connector pins or a broken cable, and it is probably useless on SATA.

Sound : set up sound alerts.
All Sound - turn on all sound alerts. Basically, these are warnings about rare events that you need to pay attention to.
Bell is a bell. It is issued at the end of a surface scan.
Auto Night mode - night mode. After one in the morning, all sounds are automatically turned off. They turn on automatically at 7 in the morning.
Use speaker - use the built-in PC speaker instead of Windows system sounds. It works only on 32-bit systems.

What's New in Version 4.99:
The interface has been radically changed:
The main menu and toolbar appeared.
The form can now be expanded to full screen and the dimensions of its parts can be set arbitrarily. All settings are saved.
The speed limit is increased to 9800 MB / s, and the number of graph points is proportional to its width.
Rarely used functions are transferred to the main menu.
The settings panel is structured. New settings added. For example, you can enable the scan to stop during fatal errors and even change the colors of some elements of the interface.
It is possible to translate the interface into other languages, but so far nothing needs to be done with them - in future versions I plan to add translations of not only signatures, but also program messages.
Translated interface elements into Russian. While it may contain errors - this is an experiment. In the future, it is also planned to translate all internal messages. Off by default in the main menu
Added more automation, which can be disabled in the settings.
Double-clicking on the SMART log opens it in the editor;
Added new names for SMART magazines;
An attempt was made to automatically set the block size for the NVMe SSD.
Added display of temperature in the passport via Smart Command Transport, and expanded the detection of the properties supported by the drive.
A bunch of bugs of version 4.76 have been fixed, listing which is not enough space ...
